Course Structure

The course runs over three days and consists of lectures, skill stations, demonstrations and moulages. Canidates are drawn from all grades of anaesthesia and from a number of para-anaesthesia areas. Everyone participates on an equal footing, although those with personal experience in any particular area are encouraged to offer assistance to their fellow candidates.
Instructors are drawn from many areas of anaesthesia and critical care. Most are also instructors in other courses such as ATLS, ALS, APLS, PHTLS, StaR, whilst others simply have experience and enthusiasm in trauma management. Since the course is also aimed at ODA / ODP's and ICU staff, we have also included trainers in these areas to assist as instructors. In addition, our links with the Fire and Rescue Services have produced a number of non-medical 'specialist instructors'.

The current manual is the forth edition and we stand by our initial intention of keeping all aspects of the course as up to date as possible. The primary Survey and Kinematics, Airway and Shock chapters have been completely re-written and large additions have been made to the remaining chapters. The lectures are short and concise and they provide the skeleton upon which the candidates pull together their pre-existing knowledge, the detailed information in the handbook and the practical skills they will learn.
The skill stations vary, some being more of a demonstration, whilst others require considerable participation by all candidates. The moulages consist of demonstarations (basic, intermediate and advanced, both pre-hospital and hospital based), practice stations and finally the test station.
We have a full day joint training exercise with the Fire Brigade Training School in Chorley where there is a full vehicle extrication simulation with both the Fire Brigade and Medical Forward Aid Team. We have previously had such positive feedback about the extrication, forward aid and hazardous chemical sessions, that this area of teaching has been expanded considerably.

During the course each candidate has a mentor who will offer advice and support to individuals who may be having difficulties in any particular area. At the end of the course, each candidate is examined by a MCQ paper, a skill-test station and a moulage test satation. Failure of any part will require a re-sit to obtain provider status. Those candidates who fulfil the criteria for instructor status are invited to subsequent courses as instructor candidates and after three courses, and subject to a satisfactory evaluation of teaching skills (lecturing, skills station, moulage practice and moulage testing) will be offered full instructor status.
